As part of our ongoing menstrual health project at Irikisongo Secondary School, we held a series of special sessions that brought together over 1000 students for an open and interactive discussion on menstruation. To make the sessions more impactful, we invited a professional nurse who shared expert knowledge on different aspects of menstrual health.
The nurse focused on an important topic often overlooked in schools, menstrual abnormalities and menstrual pain. Students learned how to recognize signs that require medical attention, how to manage discomfort in healthy ways, and when to seek professional support. This helped to dispel fears, correct misinformation, and provide practical guidance that students can apply in their daily lives.
The presence of a health professional also underscored the importance of having qualified voices in menstrual education. Many students expressed that they felt more confident asking questions because the nurse provided clear, compassionate, and accurate answers.
By the end of the sessions, 1000 students were not only more informed but also more empowered to approach menstruation with dignity and care. The session served as a reminder that involving professionals in such conversations is essential for building healthier, more supportive learning environments for young people.
