Greetings from St Martins School and the Kibagare community. We are grateful for your continued support. It has been a busy few months, with positive progress and continued engagement. Our community team has been able to meet most of their set targets for the quarter. We have continued to offer support in education, health, economic empowerment and psychosocial support. The initiatives have continued to uplift the families, encourage ownership and ensure the programs are scaleable and members are able to be self reliant.
Education is still our main mission and we have a total of 940 learners in our primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. We have continued with the daily feeding programs and the weekend feeding program - feeding 15,600 children through in the last three months through the Saturday feeding Program. Our feeding programs are the lifeline for most of the children living in the Kibagare Slum and sorrounding slums.
We have also continued with our vocational training program. To date we have 18 trainees pursuing tailoring and design and also responsible for making school uniforms for our children.
On economic empowerment, currently there are 35 active voluntary loanings and savings groups with a total of 705 members. Through the program a few groups have received KES 50,000 in loans to boost and strengthen their groups capital base. Most of the members of these groups run small scale business and through trainings on entrepreneurship, financial management and business follow ups the businesses have shown stable growth and we are optimistic that they will continue doing well despite the harsh economic environment they operate in. The Cooperative and business boost are a model we are keen on implemting as we are sure of having a sustainable way to support and encourage more people to join and engage.
Our HIV awareness, nutrition and adherence campaigns have been ongoing since our last update and the community and the groups we are working with have benefitted from the sessions we have had. Persistent follow ups on defaulters and assistance to resume care and treatment have enabled the team trace 6 defaulters through the mentor mother with the help of the local facility which helping with tracing and placement.
Mental Health is still a huge challenge for families living in informal settlements, we have continued with our sensitization programs and helped individuals and groups receive counselling in our facility and also during the home visits. Focus is on self awareness, life skills, youth enablement for both youths and their guardians, building resilience and making informed decisions. Through this we have been able to reach more than 1000 community members in the last three months.
On leadership and capacity building, we held a comprehensive training for Kibagare community leaders, among the community health volunteers, Nyumba Kumi Officials, security teams, youth representatives and local administrators with empasis on responsible governance, community safety and their roles as leaders in empowerment and ensuring the enviroment within this community is stable and good for small businesses.
27 groups of the 35 have been registered as self help groups through the depertment of social development. this formalizes the grassroots structure and ensuring the groupd have access to financial services and inclusion for sustainability and growth.
For the next calender year we plan to
All in all we are grateful for the continued support to date.
Thank you.
