One Big Sister, Dozens of Smiles

How Volunteer Pinxi Became a Mentor

At a winter camp tucked away in a quieter corner of Taiwan, the room bursts with laughter, movement, and bright ideas. Pinxi guides a group of children through scavenger hunts, movement games, and moments of joy.

Pinxi isn’t a student teacher or education intern. She’s just a third-year college student. But through Youth Ignite, she stepped into a role far bigger than herself: a mentor.

From Passion to Action

Pinxi has always loved working with kids. Before joining the Youth Ignite volunteer program, she had already helped lead many camps for high school students. "I love seeing others smile, it feels like I’m being encouraged too," she shared.

But this was her first time leading a camp for younger and more disadvantaged students. It wasn’t just about showing up with good intentions; she needed to learn how to truly connect, communicate, and lead.

Over several months, Pinxi and other youth volunteers received structured training: workshops on activity planning, techniques for engaging kids with different personalities, and they all observed at MSM’s after-school programs. She picked up tools she never had before—like how to manage a room of energetic kids, how to meet their emotions in the moment with care, and most of all, how simple presence can leave a lasting impact.

A Winter Camp That Mattered

This February, Pinxi and her peers went to Hualien to lead a multi-day winter camp for children from remote and underserved communities. Some of these kids were part of MSM’s child sponsorship program. Pinxi was quite nervous at first; she knew how much of an impact a good experience could bring to a child and feared messing up. "Sometimes I wanted so badly to fit in that I forgot I was there to care for them," she reflected.

As the camp unfolded, she found her rhythm. From leading the icebreaker to building robots, Lego wars to rocket races, she leaned into her training. She didn’t just give instructions; she was offering presence. Pinxi became the big sister to many who have never had one.

The Bigger Picture

This is what Youth Ignite is all about. It’s not just about helping young people grow but equipping them to uplift others. When we train youth like Pinxi, we’re creating a ripple effect of care and capability. One mentor can reach dozens of children, and the impact won’t stop after one camp.

Your Role in All This

Every donation to Youth Ignite supports hands-on training, thoughtful programming, and life-changing experiences. When you give, you’re not only empowering someone like Pinx—you’re helping her show up for kids who need someone in their corner.

Support the next generation of changemakers—and the kids they’re lifting up along the way.
