Take Environmental Education to the Next Level!

At Los Algarrobos School, environmental education goes beyond the classroom, empowering students to take meaningful action in their surroundings. This year, sixth-grade students demonstrated remarkable leadership by identifying and addressing an ecological issue within their school grounds.

During their environmental studies class, students observed that several areas of the schoolyard had lost their plant cover, leaving dry, barren spaces. Recognizing an opportunity to restore these areas, they designed and implemented a reforestation initiative. With the guidance of their teacher, Tanya Zambrano, they mapped the affected zones, selected native plant species, and organized a planting day. Equipped with tools and a strong sense of purpose, they worked together to revitalize their school environment.

Beyond reforestation, the students also took the initiative to improve and maintain the school’s gardens. With a structured approach, they carried out regular activities such as soil maintenance, plant care, and area clean-ups. Their ongoing commitment transformed the gardens into vibrant spaces that not only enhance biodiversity but also foster a sense of pride and environmental responsibility within the school community.

This initiative provided students with hands-on experience in sustainability, teamwork, and leadership, reinforcing key values that extend beyond academic learning. Their efforts exemplify how environmental education can cultivate a generation of informed and proactive individuals in conservation efforts.

Since the school year started in May, we have continued our commitment to Environmental Education through a series of initiatives designed to engage students in conservation and sustainability. We have implemented a broader recycling program across the school, encouraging students to sort waste, reuse materials, and reduce single-use plastics. Each class has its own waste separation system, which has fostered personal and community responsibility.

Additionally, we have introduced a school garden where students, from the youngest to the oldest, actively participate in growing vegetables, and herbs. This garden not only serves as a practical educational tool but also promotes healthy eating and self-sufficiency. Students learn about the plant life cycle, the importance of biodiversity, and the benefits of organic farming.

Finally, our students in fourth through seventh grade are committed to participating in a monthly beach clean up along with local business owners and residents. We hope these hands on experiences will create a lasting impression on our students and help them establish ecological practices as part of their daily routines.
