The project, through our Survival Package, aims to transform agriculture into a viable business opportunity for youth in our community.Since 2005 we have partnered with subsistence farmers who began as volunteer health workers. We educated them on the importance of a balanced diet during the AIDS epidemic leading them to pioneer vegetable gardening. In 2023 we introduced the innovative technique of planting vegetables in rings. We now seek to guide their children to view agriculture as a business.
Many young individuals in our community are currently in school, wanting to become nurses and teachers and feel disconnected from their families' agricultural efforts. This disconnection contributes to a lack of engagement in productive activities. The region faces a staggering 40% failure rate in Grade 12 and an 80% unemployment rate, highlighting the urgent need for practical skills and opportunities for the youth.
We will connect with families from the Survival Package initiative, assessing their children & grandchildren to identify those not engaged in productive activities. The project will involve them in growing & selling vegetables, producing organic fertilizer, constructing clay stoves, cutting firewood & building pigeon kraals. We will motivate the by paying them pocket money weekly. We will also teach money management skills & supply essential materials for their work.
In the long term, we anticipate that the agriculture and agroforestry knowledge gained through our Survival Package will lead to improved livelihoods for these families, increased entrepreneurial efforts, and a reduction in issues such as teenage pregnancy, child marriage, crime, and suicide.
