Dignity & Rights for Older Adults in DRC

By ferdinand cito | Coordinator of project

1. Background and Context
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), older people are among the most neglected and marginalized groups. Many live in extreme poverty, lacking access to adequate healthcare, nutritious food, safe housing, and social protection. Chronic illnesses, malnutrition, and social isolation are widespread. In cities such as Bukavu and Goma, the challenges are worsened by ongoing insecurity, displacement, and widespread unawareness of the rights and value of older persons.

Despite their life experience and potential contributions, older adults are often excluded from humanitarian and development programs. Many face systemic discrimination and are denied the opportunity to remain active and autonomous in their communities.

2. Project Objectives
This project seeks to restore dignity, autonomy, and inclusion to older people in Bukavu and Goma by:

  • Promoting targeted healthcare access for chronic illness and malnutrition.
  • Creating community-based support networks to combat isolation and strengthen resilience.
  • Providing skills and training for small-scale income-generating activities.
  • Advocating for anti-discrimination policies to protect the rights of older adults.

3. Planned Activities

  • Health Support: Regular medical screenings, nutritional supplements, and access to medications.
  • Social Inclusion: Formation of peer support groups and intergenerational exchange programs.
  • Economic Empowerment: Vocational training and small grants to launch age-appropriate micro-projects.
  • Awareness and Advocacy: Sensitization workshops for communities and institutions about the value and rights of older people.

4. Expected Long-Term Impact

  • Economic Independence: Over 200 older adults will gain access to income-generating activities and financial stability.
  • Improved Health: Better access to age-appropriate care will lead to improved health and life expectancy.
  • Reduced Discrimination: Public awareness and advocacy will challenge ageism and promote inclusive policies.
  • Community Resilience: Intergenerational collaboration will enhance social bonds and local development.

5. Budget and Funding

  • Total Budget Required: $40,000 USD
  • Funds Raised to Date: $0
With the support of GlobalGiving, we are confident we will begin raising the necessary funds to reach our target. Our goal is to activate at least 30% of the budget in the coming months to launch the first phase of this life-changing initiative.

Older people in DRC have been forgotten for too long. This project is a call to justice and compassion. Every contribution through GlobalGiving helps restore dignity, health, and purpose to those who built our communities.

We urge donors, partners, and advocates to join us in building a society where older people are respected, included, and supported—not left behind.

This initiative represents a shift toward inclusive humanitarian action that values every stage of life. Supporting this project is not only about meeting urgent needs—it's about building a society that honors human dignity at all ages. With your support and GlobalGiving’s platform, we can make this vision a reality.
