Malnutrition and hunger is the gravest threat to global public health. Malnutrition is by far the largest contributor of child mortality globally. Severe hunger is especially prevalent amongst street children who are most vulnerable to disease and live under extremely difficult conditions (Priya, 2014). Sadly, most of street children are suffering from malnutrition making them more susceptible to disease and early death. They attending school often arrive with an empty stomach, making it harder to focus on lessons.
Fortunately, Childhope Philippines implements a holistic approach, which includes program in the areas of education, health and nutrition, values, and livelihoods for children in the streets. We work with vulnerable and at-risk children living in the streets, and their families to cultivate the social, economic, cultural, and environmental conditions needed for families to thrive. We believe that health and education always go hand-in-hand. Under the Street Education & Protection Program, the KliniKalye Project (Mobile Health Clinic) has a dedicated team composed of a medical doctor, an ambulance driver, Junior Health Workers, and volunteers.
WHAT WE DO:
We visit the different areas where Childhope operates, and reaches out to children needing health services. The Klinikalye van itself is complete with the necessary medicines and supplements, supplies, and equipment to address common health problems of street children. Assisted medical referrals to appropriate health facilities and institutions are facilitated by the social workers. Street children receive health education through alternative education sessions with their street educators.
We also provide daily meals through feeding programs to promote attendance, improve performance, and nourish growing bodies.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
In celebration of Nutrition Month, Childhope make an action dedicated to tackling global hunger and malnutrition. With the theme of “Ang Batang Healthy, Ay Batang Happy (Stay Healthy, Be Happy): Bringing Health Care Closer to the Children”, held annually on July, volunteers and our partners come together to declare their commitment to eradicate worldwide hunger and malnutrition from our lifetime.
We seek relationships with organizations, public and private corporations, foundations, and individuals that share a passion for serving children. Childhope PH has prepared several of activities to help us end hunger and malnutrition and be able to make street child a happy and positive one.
Donors/ sponsors and volunteers can conduct various activities to our street children beneficiaries and will be assigning to our designated areas of operations.
