This project will partner with people experiencing homeless to become leaders in thier communities to assist others with resolving homelessness. The project consist of multiple components. The Bring America Home NOW (BAHN) Campaign, spearheaded by the National Coalition for the Homeless, is a comprehensive grassroots campaign to end homelessness in the U.S. Led by people who have themselves experienced homelessness, the campaign focuses on the passage of federal legislation aimed at addressing
In the richest country in the world, more than 700,000 Americans are homeless each night, with millions more experiencing homelessness through the course of each year. In fact, in no county in the U.S. can a household afford a two-bedroom unit (i.e., not paying more than 30% of income) on the minimum wage or Social Security/Disability. Millions of Americans experiencing homelessness remain uninsured, with limited access to health care and behavioral health services.
Homelessness has too often been viewed as a personal failure, rather than a societal one. Federal policy to address homelessness has been overly incremental in nature, attending to the most obvious symptoms while ignoring the root causes. Homelessness remains deeply entrenched in communities across the country, driven by structural inequities, lack of affordable housing, and ongoing poverty. People experiencing homelessness-have too often been excluded from decision-making tables.
NCH takes as it first principle of practice that people experiencing homelessness should be involved at all levels of the work to end homelessness. This will require a significant shift on the part of homeless service providers, local officials, funders, and national organizations. NCH is working with a national network of thought leaders to change the narrative back to working on a charitable approach to solving problems instead of a law enforcement approach.
