This fund showcases BBS programs and the impact of small donations. Threads of Transformation began in the DRCongo, training youth in design and repurposing historically significant garments. Due to the ongoing DRC conflict, BBS expediated its planned expansion early to northern Uganda and South Sudanese refugee women. This project will continue to empower through fashion and creativity, exploring how design with purpose can transform lives, foster resilience, and build unity across borders.
Since the outbreak of civil war in South Sudan in 2013, refugees from multiple, often conflicting tribes have sought shelter in northern Uganda. In the Adjumani settlements, historic animosities have resurfaced, leading to rising inter-tribal violence, including arson and killings. These tensions not only divide refugee communities but also strain relationships with local Ugandan hosts. Without opportunities for healing and collaboration, cycles of mistrust and violence will continue.
This project brings together South Sudanese women from historically divided tribes living in the Adjumani refugee settlements. Through training in tailoring, upcycling, and entrepreneurship, the program creates income-generating opportunities that build self-reliance. Just as importantly, it fosters inter-tribal peace by encouraging collaboration, dialogue, and trust-building among participants-helping to heal deep-rooted divisions and promote unity through shared purpose and creativity.
In the long term, Threads of Transformation will help build more cohesive and peaceful refugee communities by fostering inter-tribal understanding among South Sudanese women. By equipping participants with creative and entrepreneurial skills, the program not only creates sustainable livelihoods but also cultivates local leadership and resilience. These women become agents of change-passing on skills, challenging harmful narratives, and strengthening social fabric within and across tribes.
