Advancing Sustainability Through Solar Energy
Our solar initiative marks a major leap toward energy independence and operational resilience. With the generous support of a donor, we have successfully installed a, 150 kW, three-phase solar energy system with 120 kWh of battery storage. This state-of-the-art system now powers the upper section of our building, including our Laundry and Nursing Department — two of our highest energy-consuming areas.
The installation began in July and was officially completed and switched on Monday, 11 August. We are optimistic that this will result in significant electricity cost savings, enabling us to redirect those funds toward the care and development of our residents.
We have also received an additional donation that will allow us to purchase 12 more batteries, increasing our total battery storage capacity.
While this milestone is cause for celebration, it represents only the first phase of our vision. Our long-term goal is to have enough solar capacity to power our entire property. We have already received a quotation for the required system, and our current fundraising efforts are focused on securing this funding, ensuring that Woodside becomes as sustainable and self-reliant as possible.
Key Progress Highlights:
Expanding the 500 Club Lottery
Our 500 Club remains a vital fundraising initiative. In March, a refreshed membership drive resulted in:
We have now moved to Phase Two — raising awareness through community partnerships. For example, Afters at 44 on Stanley is displaying our “Make a Change — It Costs Less Than a Cup of Coffee” cards. We are engaging additional venues and working with other donors to expand the campaign’s reach.
Our ultimate goal is 2,000 members, generating over R1 million annually to help support our residents and programmes.
Training the Care Professionals of Tomorrow
We remain a preferred training facility for third- and fourth-year students from institutions such as the University of Johannesburg, WITS, Baragwanath, Ann Latsky, Whitestone College, and others. Social work students also complete their practical training with us, gaining hands-on experience in caring for individuals with profound intellectual and physical disabilities.
Currently, we are hosting a medical student from the United States who has been volunteering since June as part of her degree requirements. Since January 2025, seven students have completed their training at Woodside, and 98 staff members have benefitted from in-service professional development this year.
Website Rebuild Progress
Our new WordPress-based website, developed pro bono by three volunteers from ForGood, is well underway. Weekly project meetings have maintained momentum, and the refreshed, modern, and user-friendly site will soon offer improved flexibility and in-house content management.
Beautification and Facility Improvements
We have adopted a proactive approach to maintenance, addressing issues before they escalate. Additionally, we have created peaceful garden spaces for residents, families, and staff — modest changes that have made a meaningful difference to the Sanctuary’s atmosphere and reflect the pride we take in our home.
Special Events and Celebrations at Woodside Sanctuary:
On Friday, 18 July 2025, Woodside Sanctuary was honoured to host teams from the SABC, Playmakers, staff members and students from the University of Johannesburg, as well as representatives from H&M, who chose to spend their 67 minutes with us in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day.
Their visit brought an atmosphere of joy, energy, and togetherness to our home. Activities during the day included:
The combined efforts of these groups reflected the values that Nelson Mandela Day seeks to inspire — compassion, generosity, and service to others. Their contributions had a meaningful impact:
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to each organisation and individual who took part. Your decision to dedicate your 67 minutes of service to Woodside Sanctuary has left a lasting impression, and your kindness will be remembered by all.
In Closing
As we reflect on the milestones and challenges of the past period, we are deeply grateful for the compassion, generosity, and belief in our mission shown by our supporters. A special and heartfelt thank you goes to our GlobalGiving donors, whose continued contributions have been a lifeline for Woodside Sanctuary. Your generosity directly sustains our ability to provide holistic care, dignity, and love to our residents — our cherished angels — and to create a safe, nurturing environment where they can thrive. Every donation, no matter the size, is a testament to your shared commitment to building a more inclusive and caring world. On behalf of our residents, staff, and management, thank you for walking this journey with us and helping to make Woodside not just a sanctuary, but a true home.
