Inclusive Learning Beyond Barriers: KalyEskwela PH

KALYESKWELA

The KalyEskwela: Mobile Learning Hub (KE) advances Sustainable Development Goal 4 by promoting inclusive, equitable, and quality education for children in street situations. During the reporting period, KalyEskwela engaged 624 children (241 boys and 383 girls) through Alternative Education Sessions designed to support holistic development. These sessions covered values formation, identity and community building, child rights awareness, primary health care, substance abuse prevention, gender sensitivity, personal safety, and life skills development.

Participation in these learning activities significantly reduced children’s exposure to street-related risks such as begging, ambulant vending, and substance use, while strengthening positive behaviors, self-awareness, and decision-making. Modules on values education, child rights, health, protection, and life skills empowered children to understand their rights, practice self-protection, adopt healthy lifestyles, and envision constructive life goals beyond street life.

Complementing these interventions, KalyEskwela implemented Basic Literacy and Numeracy (BLAN) and tutorial sessions to support academic performance and school retention. A total of 153 children, including in-school and out-of-school learners, benefited from these sessions, with all participants demonstrating measurable improvements in writing and problem-solving skills; 20 children successfully completed the BLAN program. Childhope’s education initiatives remain focused on preventing school dropouts, ensuring grade-level progression, and prioritizing the most at-risk learners. In School Year 2024–2025, 600 monitored children progressed to the next grade level, including two who completed college. For School Year 2025–2026, Childhope continues to support 523 enrolled learners, 82 of whom receive intensive education case management and financial assistance through the KalyEskwela Assistance Program. These efforts encompass learners across elementary, secondary, college, and Alternative Learning System levels, reinforcing Childhope’s commitment to sustained educational access and lifelong learning.

Building Safe and Green Futures for Children

On October 22, 2025, Childhope Philippines successfully conducted another meaningful Kalyeskwela session at Barangay 668, Sta. Monica, Ermita Area. The session was facilitated by Teacher Jessa in collaboration with dedicated student volunteers from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). With a total of 19 enthusiastic children participants, the activity aimed to nurture awareness, responsibility, and empowerment among young learners through engaging and value-driven discussions.

The first part of the session focused on the topic “Personal Safety and Protective Behavior,” where children were guided to understand the importance of recognizing unsafe situations and knowing their rights as children. They learned about the different forms of child abuse, how to identify potential risks, and the importance of seeking help from trusted adults when feeling unsafe. Through interactive discussions and simple activities, the session emphasized the significance of self-protection, awareness, and confidence in asserting one’s right to safety and dignity.

Meanwhile, the second part of the session—facilitated by the PUP student volunteers—centered on “Caring for Our Home,” which highlighted environmental care and disaster preparedness. The children were introduced to the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, as effective practices in protecting the environment. They also discussed ways to minimize waste, conserve natural resources, and prepare for calamities such as earthquakes. The session encouraged the children to become mindful stewards of their surroundings and proactive in promoting environmental safety within their community.

This joint initiative between Childhope Philippines and PUP volunteers reflects a shared dedication to holistic child development, integrating lessons on protection, sustainability, and resilience. By combining educational discussions with hands-on learning, the activity not only enhanced the children’s knowledge but also strengthened their sense of responsibility and compassion toward others and the environment.

Ultimately, the Kalyeskwela session at Barangay 668 stands as a testament to the power of community partnerships in shaping informed, empowered, and conscientious youth. Through continuous collaboration and commitment, Childhope Philippines and its partners continue to pave the way for children in street situations to access transformative education—one that nurtures not only the mind but also the heart, preparing them to become responsible and proactive members of society.

Youth Job Readiness with Project Bamboo

First Impression Count: Youth trained in CV Writing and Branding

Seventeen (17) youth from Batch 9 of Project Bamboo participated in a focused professional development session conducted by Michael Page, a globally recognized recruitment firm. The session centered on CV writing and personal branding, aiming to equip participants with essential tools to navigate the competitive job market. This initiative is part of Project Bamboo’s broader strategy to provide youth- particularly those in children in street situations- with practical, employment-oriented training.

The CV writing segment offered clear and structured guidance on how to present qualifications, experiences, and achievements effectively. Participants learned to tailor their resumes based on job roles, emphasizing measurable results and relevant skills. Michael Page professional also introduced key formatting standards and technique to help participants pass through applicant pass through applicant tracking system. a common part of today’s recruitment process.

In the personal branding workshop, participants were encouraged to develop a strong sense of professional identity. They were taught how to introduce themselves effectively in interviews and networking situations, refine their social media presence, and construct impactful personal summaries. These exercises were designed not only to improve self-presentation but also confidence when entering formal job settings.

This workshop is just one of several capacity-building efforts under Project Bamboo, a youth empowerment program led by Childhope Philippines. The program includes modules on entrepreneurships, digital literacy, job, readiness, and vocation training further strengthening their employment credentials and opening pathways to stable work.

Through this collaboration with Michael Page, Project Bamboo demonstrates how targeted skills training and mentorship can increase youth employability. The effort aligns with current labor development goals in the Philippines, where youth employment remains as pressing issue. Preliminary feedback from Batch 9 indicates improved preparedness for job application and interviews. As more outcomes are documented , this initiative will contiue to serve as a model for effective, community-based employment support for vulnerable children in the street situation.
