Towards Independence of Young Adults

Challenge

Young people at Malaika must leave the home when they turn 18, without a support network outside. Moving suddenly from a protected environment to complete independence can be traumatic and unsafe. They have little experience with practical responsibilities, whether they choose to study at university with a loan or look for their firs job, managing daily life on their own. Without a gradual transition, they risk failing to fully integrate into society, undermining years of support at the shelter.

Solution

This project addresses this challenge through a gradual path toward independence. Young people move into rented rooms and receive a monthly budget for food, learning how to manage daily life on their own. This controlled autonomy helps them adjust to society while keeping a stable and caring bond with the Malaika family, reducing the risk of trauma and supporting a safe integration. The project lasts up to three years for those attending university, and only a few months for those who find a job

Long-Term Impact

The project protects the long years of care invested in each child and helps prevent the risks of failing to integrate into society. By supporting a gradual path to independence, it helps young people become self-reliant adults who can manage their housing and finances. In the long term, it gives orphans the chance to build a stable and independent life, avoids the trauma of feeling abandoned again, and helps them grow into active, confident members of society,
