Dear friends and supporters,
The PPAF teams in Hinche and Jacmel, Haiti, keep advancing solar cooking, despite the crisis in the capital city. They hold demonstrations in community groups, churches and schools, they sell solar cooker kits at prices low-income families can afford, and they train and coach new customers. They know and show it saves money from fuel costs (charcoal and wood every day), contributes to respiratory health, and slows down environmental damage.
The big news in this report is the completion and publication of our completely revamped website, ppafoundation.com. We are very happy to provide our readers and the public with a crisp and focused product. It highlights solar cooking and our connections to the GlobalGiving platform. It also briefly provides perspective on our relationship with the United Nations and our experience in three countries – Madagascar, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti.
Also good news -- The Jacmel team recently received a shipment of 50 solar cooker kits from the USA, and is selling them fast to waiting customers. Since gang violence has largely isolated the country, the shipment was a welcome achievement. Another accomplishment was the organisation and conduct of the first annual solar cooking competition, held at the Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC).
As for Hinche, a notable event was a school demonstration for some 200 students, teachers and parents at a rural site on a long, muddy road. The team was rewarded with 8 sales on the spot. Back home, the team is perfecting its locally-made cookers, with reflectors that increase efficiency. This should lead to new work with the girls who learned to build their own solar cookers in July (see Report 32). Also, a youth group invited our representative to serve as the keynote speaker at an event highlighting the link between their tree-planting efforts and solar cooking.
The illustrations given in this report show that good work is continuing, even under trying circumstances. We are delighted to share such information on progress.
We want to acknowledge and thank our collaborators for their support of PPAF’s work, especially our friends at Haines Solar Cookers, LLC; Solar Oven Reflectors, LLC; Solar Education Project/GDS; Solar Cookers International; Haiti Adolescent Girls Network; the Art Creation Foundation for Children; and Konbit pou Developman Cotes de Fer. We are in regular contact with our dear colleagues in Hinche and Jacmel, and we look forward to eventual improvements from the current terrible situation in the country.
The work is innovative and exciting! Your contributions directly support and expand it!
