The project involves the construction of a fully accessible independent living training apartment. It is designed for wheelchair users with disabilities, who wish to regain their independence. Each year, 36 participants will take part in a two-month, free-of-charge residential program combining independent living training, rehabilitation, and specialist support in real life. They will learn to care for themselves, manage their home, and how to operate a wheelchair safely outdoors.
People with mobility disabilities face daily challenges at home and in their communities. Many of them lack the skills and confidence needed for independent living. Public aid is short-term and medical rather than practical. That's why we are building a training apartment and developing a program that combines rehabilitation and teaching life skills in real-life conditions. We've raised $1.61M and still need $396K. Help us reach our goal by October 31, 2026. Your support changes lives.
Our Foundation creates a training apartment complex for six residents at a time, built on over 13 years of experience of running training apartments at our main location. There, participants learn daily living skills, wheelchair mobility, and self-care under the guidance of professional instructors, including wheelchair users. The program also includes functional rehabilitation, adaptive sports, therapeutic swimming, personal development, and support in planning an independent future.
The project empowers social and professional inclusion for people with physical disabilities, helping them to actively participate in their communities and workplaces. It continues the legacy of Dr.Piotr Janaszek, who in the 1970s was organizing some of the first summer camps for children with disabilities there. Building the training apartment is the next step in creating a unique regional hub for disability-inclusive support, serving both the local community and people from across the country.
