In Ethiopia 40% of children between 1-9 years old have active trachoma. Teachers are on the front line of the fight to save the sight of children. To tackle the spread of trachoma in schools, Orbis trains teachers in primary eye care, and vision testing; meaning he or she is able to refer pupils when they need glasses or spot the first signs of eye disease.
As well as training teachers in basic primary eye care, Orbis has established school eye care clubs across Ethiopia, where students learn how to take good care of their eyes and what to do if their vision begins to deteriorate; and the importance of hygiene for good eye care.
One of the eye care clubs recently put on a dramatic performance, centred on a boy who ignores advice from his classmates about hygiene and contracts trachoma. Luckily, he is visited by a Health Extension Worker who diagnoses his condition and refers him for treatment at a health centre. Of the 600 students at the school, there are now 70 members of the school eye care club!
Thank you so much for helping the teachers of Ethiopia to save their students’ sight.
