Children with poor eye sight struggle in school. For us, it means a simple trip to the optometrist to pick a new pair of glasses. In rural Ethiopia it is a bit more challenging as there are only 230 for a country with a population of over 100 million.
It is the teacher who notices when their student cannot see the board in the classroom or the football on the school yard. The teachers are on the front lines in the fight against sight loss as they see it in their pupils every day.
Orbis is training these teachers to identify their students who might need glasses. We provide them with training so they can test their students' eye sight and recommend them to an optometrist if they need glasses. This means that their students can continue their education and enjoy their childhood.
