Elisabeth lives in Ethiopia and teaches at the local school. Elisabeth is one of the 24 Orbis-trained teachers on primary eye care and vision testing for refractive error on school children in this district.
Before Elisabeth was trained the school didn’t have a trained teacher on primary eye care. Moreover, there wasn't a school eye care club at the primary school.
After her training, Elisabeth's first task was to establish the school eye care club incorporating 17 student members. Following this she started screening the students for potential refractive error and other vision problems.
In 2014 alone, Elisabeth was able to screen 150 students. Out of the 150 students, eight students were found to have symptoms of low vision. Elisabeth then took these students to an Orbis supported Secondary Eye Care Unit for re-screening by a professional optometrist. Seven students were found to be experiencing refractive error received free spectacles donated by Orbis.
All of these these students are now thriving at school and are finding their studies much easier!
