Training Teachers to Save Sight

Today I would like to inrodcude you to Wondmagne, a teacher at Dorze Holo Primary School, in the ouskirts of Arba Minch.

Wondmagne received basic training on eye care by Orbis, and in2024 alone, his attentiveness helped 10 students receive prescription glasses - free of charge, dramatically improving their ability to engage in class and continue their education without barriers.

Every week, Wondmagne leads a session of the School Eye Health Club, which brings together around 35 students and six fellow teachers. These interactive sessions are designed to educate students on the importance of eye health, with a strong focus on the World Health Organization’s SAFE strategy (Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvement) — a proven approach to eliminating trachoma.

Through the club, students learn how to care for their eyes, recognise early signs of infection or vision problems, and understand when and how to seek help. Wondmagne also plays a crucial role in identifying children with potential vision issues.

As a father of four, Wondmagne deeply understands the value of good eyesight in a child’s educational journey. His commitment to eye health education not only benefits his students but helps to build a culture of prevention and awareness that extends beyond the school gates and into the wider community.
