Our true stories #10

By Fenia Biniari | Communications Manager

Dear GlobalGivers,

Music is a tool that can transform children’s lives. By giving a music instrument to kids you support them to open up a new door and create their own path in life. Music can empower them and give them the chance to acquire new artistic and life skills to strive for a better future. El Sistema Greece is providing free music classes to the kids who live at the Refugee Camp of Schisto. For the children who live there, musical instruments work as a means of expression, creativity and help them claim a better future.

We would like to share with you the story of three sisters Nilia 13, Diana 12 and Anita 9 years old who were forced to flee their home in Afghanistan in the search for a new home and recently joined our viola class in Schisto Refugee Camp. They really enjoy being part of the El Sistema Greece community and their music class has become their favorite activity during the week. As they have shared with our team, they feel that through music they have found a big family where they belong. Apart from their music classes they are always very willing to support their teacher with the preparation of the lesson and with the interpretation with the other kids when needed.

Due to their dedication and progress we provided them with violas to study at home and we are going to include them soon in the Kipseli Orchestra of El Sistema Greece. Kipseli Orchestra is an intercultural educational music ensemble that offers its members high level orchestral education, based on the teaching methodology of El Sistema Venezuela. According to this particular musical methodology, the orchestra is the ideal environment for children to develop communication and collaboration skills to build a better future through art and creativity.

We are looking forward to seeing the smiles on their faces when we tell them the big news and we can’t wait to introduce them to the other members of this orchestra, which we hope will become their own welcoming community.

This story reflects how a small step can bring a big change. We are more than thankful to have you by our side in all these steps we take towards children’s social development.

With great appreciation,

Friends of El Sistema Greece!
