Providing a Lifeline of Hope in Afghanistan

Summary

As we look back on the first eleven months of 2025, the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) remains a steadfast beacon of hope for families across Afghanistan. While our specific cardiac care fund is still seeking the substantial support needed to launch the next round of dedicated surgeries, the hospital’s overall Patient Welfare Program has been working tirelessly to ensure that poverty does not become a death sentence for the vulnerable.

Impact by the Numbers (Jan – Nov 2025)

Your interest in our mission fuels a massive healthcare engine. In the first 11 months of this year, FMIC’s Patient Welfare Department has reached incredible milestones:

Outpatient Support: 58,722 patient visits were facilitated for those who could not afford consultation, diagnostic tests, or pharmacy costs. These visits are often the first step in identifying life-threatening cardiac conditions in children.
Inpatient Care: 9,184 patients were admitted for critical care, surgeries, and long-term recovery. This represents thousands of families who walked through our doors in despair and received the high-quality medical treatment they deserved, regardless of their financial status.

The Cardiac Challenge

Within these numbers are hundreds of children suffering from congenital heart defects. While our general welfare program helps stabilize many of these patients, specialized cardiac procedures—such as open-heart surgeries and angioplasties—require dedicated funding due to the high cost of specialized consumables and equipment.

Currently, the gap between the number of children diagnosed and the number of surgeries we can fund remains a challenge. However, the infrastructure is ready, our surgeons are prepared, and our 2025 stats prove that FMIC is successfully managing one of the highest patient volumes in the region.

Since its establishment in 2006, the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) has been committed to delivering high-quality, life-saving healthcare services to the people of Afghanistan. For nearly two decades, FMIC has not only offered state-of-the-art medical care through its highly trained professionals, advanced technologies, and international expertise, but it has also ensured that financial barriers do not prevent access to essential health services.

Through its Patient Welfare Program, FMIC has supported more than 840,000 patients, providing critical care with a financial impact exceeding USD 60 million. This program continues to embody FMIC’s mission of bringing hope and healing to those who would otherwise be unable to afford treatment.

Behind these numbers lie countless stories of resilience, recovery, and renewed life. FMIC has been a genuine ray of hope for families, particularly those from humble economic backgrounds who are faced with severe medical conditions.

One such story is that of Ahad, a young boy whose journey reflects the transformative impact of cardiac care at FMIC. Born with a congenital heart defect, Ahad struggled with every breath he took. His family, with limited financial means, feared that access to life-saving surgery would remain an impossible dream. Through the support of FMIC’s Patient Welfare Program, Ahad received the care he desperately needed.
