Thank you for your generous and sustained support for the Turkey & Syria Earthquake Relief Fund. Your commitment continues to fuel long-term recovery efforts in one of the most challenging humanitarian contexts in the world.

Since the devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, local organizations have worked through the aftershocks—both physical and emotional—as needs continue to surface and shift. The media cameras may have left, but community organizations stayed. They moved with grace from lifesaving care to the slower, more deliberate work of rebuilding schools, homes, jobs, homes, and the culture/fabric of the community impacted itself. Late last year, I traveled through Turkey and Syria to meet some of the organizations at the heart of this work.

What we saw was sobering: Construction crews still dot the landscape, thousands of families remain displaced in storage unit camps, and countless others still lack viable livelihoods and consistent educational opportunities.

In Syria, repeatedly displaced families continue to live in makeshift accommodations with limited services. It was a stark reminder: recovery is a long road, with no shortcuts. And in both Turkey and Syria, that road is still unfolding.

As political change and instability compounds in northern Syria, local organizations are stepping in to rebuild community systems and push for essential services with limited resources. Their leadership is strong. But their funding remains uncertain. That’s why we’re so thankful for people like you—because you make work like this an ongoing possibility.

Here’s what you’re helping fund:

  • Space of Peace is a Syrian, women-led organization distributing winter kits to families affected by the earthquake and ongoing instability in the region. Their work focuses on female-headed households, widows, orphans, and families with children with disabilities. especially with the onset of winter and the increased risks from recurring seismic activity and harsh weather conditions.
  • SEDYAD (Serinyol Elele Dayanisma Dernegi) is a NGO that formed from within the community of Hatay, Turkey in the aftermath of the earthquakes.  This includes the Sedyad Music House, a unique initiative based in earthquake-affected communities in Hatay inspired by the healing power of art. Their local team uses daily music lessons and safe spaces for music creation to support displaced children in Hatay in need of stress-free, creative after-school environments..
  • SEMA (Syrian Expatriates Medical Association) is led by Syrian doctor and expatriates. They operate six mobile clinics across Syria’s hardest-hit regions, providing free medical care and nutritional support for pregnant and nursing women and children. Your support is funding six mobile clinics roaming the hardest-hit areas of Syria offering free-of-charge medical services along with nutritional support for pregnant and lactating women as well as children.

It’s an honor to work with these local organizations and leaders helping communities get the support they need—not just in the immediate aftermath, but for the years it takes to rebuild lives. With your continued support, we can keep showing up for the people who are still repairing, still recovering, still hoping.

With gratitude,

Amelia + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
