No More Darkness: A Light for Georgette

By Giulia Camuffo | Project Associate

In Aleppo, electricity is a luxury that lasts only two hours a day. For most families, this means living in total darkness, with no running water, no way to store food, and no relief from the stifling heat. But for the elderly and the sick, the lack of power is more than an inconvenience—it is a threat to their survival.

Georgette is an elderly woman in advanced age who requires constant care. Her assistant, Rana, recently shared how a new solar and battery system provided by us has completely transformed their lives.

"This system helped me feel free," Rana explains. Before the installation, simple tasks were a struggle. Now, the impact is life-changing:

  • Medical Care: The electricity allows them to run an air mattress constantly, which is vital for Georgette’s health and comfort.

  • Safety at Night: Rana can finally see clearly to administer medication during the night.

  • Dignity in Daily Tasks: Laundry and household chores are now organized and on schedule, rather than rushed during the brief windows of city power.

"You are not alone". When the friars visited Georgette to tell her that donors from all over the world were praying for her and supporting her care, her response was simple and moving: "I love them very much. They opened the door and came to me. Thank you, because now I know I am never alone."

Our Progress and the Waiting List

Thanks to your incredible support, we have already funded the first 100 families, with 25 installations completed and 75 currently in progress. However, the call for help is growing.

Currently, 110 more families—all with children or elderly members like Georgette—are on our waiting list. In a city where the grid has failed, solar energy is the only long-term solution to bring back light and hope.
