Dear Supporters,
In the past three months, your unwavering support has been instrumental in our mission to rescue and rehabilitate endangered sea turtles along South Africa's coastline.
Rescue Operations:
Following severe storms in April, our dedicated beach rescue teams sprang into action, rescuing a record 605 loggerhead hatchlings. These hatchlings, often affected by oceanic plastic pollution, were transported to our rehabilitation center in Cape Town. There, they underwent essential medical treatments, including MRIs, to assess their health and determine appropriate care.
Rehabilitation and Release:
The rehabilitation process is meticulous, with each hatchling requiring approximately six months of care, costing around $3,000 per hatchling. Once deemed fit, they are equipped with radio tags and released into Marine Protected Areas to ensure their safe return to the ocean. On November 6th, we successfully released the first 12 hatchlings, marking a significant milestone in our conservation efforts.
Challenges and Needs:
Despite our progress, funding constraints have limited our capacity to continue this vital work. The remaining 500+ hatchlings await release, and additional resources are needed to cover transportation, tagging, and monitoring costs.
Looking Ahead:
We are committed to ensuring the survival of these hatchlings and are actively seeking funding to facilitate their release. Your continued support is crucial in helping us achieve this goal.
GlobalGiving Bonus Day – July 16–17:
We are excited to announce that GlobalGiving's Bonus Day will take place on July 16–17. This is a wonderful opportunity to amplify your impact. Donations between $100 and $1,000 will be eligible to share in a $125,000 Incentive Fund. Your contribution during this period can make a significant difference in our efforts to rescue and rehabilitate more sea turtles.
Thank you for being a vital part of this journey. Together, we are making a lasting impact on the conservation of endangered sea turtles.
