The Fugee HiEd Scholarship is a Bachelor's degree scholarship in its 5th year milestone, awarded to qualified and deserving refugee students living in Malaysia. Beyond covering tuition fees, the scholarship offers access to holistic development programmes, including mentorship, career counselling, volunteering opportunities, workshops, internships and subsidised mental health support. For cohort 5, we have awarded 30 new scholarships, bringing the total number of HiEd recipients to 87.
The opportunity for refugees to pursue tertiary education is extremely limited in Malaysia due to the absence of legal frameworks. Less than 1,5% of refugee youth in the country are enrolled in universities, as compared to the 7% enrolment rate of young refugees worldwide according to UNHCR statistics, and 45% enrolment of Malaysians in higher education. Being excluded and left behind in education has tremendous negative effects on the future of the refugee population for generations to come.
We are committed to providing refugee youth with financial needs, excellent past academic performance, and demonstrated community impact, the opportunity to study full-time undergraduate degrees through the award of scholarships. The scholars will also be given access to volunteering programs, mentorship, mental health support, internship placements, and extracurricular activities to increase their community interaction and personal development.
Our Scholarship has supported 87 refugee students from 10+ different nations to complete their higher education degrees, which also provides additional development opportunities to develop their personal skills and facilitate greater access to employment opportunities. This drastically improves the chances of resettlement, as evidenced by the 5 scholars being successfully accepted into Australia Refugee Student Settlement Pathway. Our goal is to continue to provide these scholarships annually.
