Summary

This project will upgrade a remote solar business hub in North Eastern Tanzania serving more than 300 Maasai villagers with clean water for cooking, cleaning and livestock rearing, as well as essential services like maize milling, a salon, convenience store and veterinary medicine. In this region, surface water is scarce for 8 months of the year, and this solar borehole provides the only source of clean water. Funds are needed to repair booster pumps, pipes, and upgrade available services.

Challenge

For villagers around Ormoti business hub in North Eastern Tanzania, surface water is almost non-existent for 8 months of the year. Villagers walk over 5km in search of water, or buy from boreholes which pump from 200m underground. A solar system at Ormoti business hub is now reliably powering their clean water supply, but the system needs upgrading to pump to further distribution points, and to expand and repair solar-powered services such as maize milling, milk cooling, and veterinary services.

Solution

We will repair the pipes to the further water distribution points, and install a new booster pump to ensure villagers can reliably collect water from closer to their houses. We will also replace the motor on the existing milling machine which is old and has been breaking regularly, as well as add milk cooling services and expand the veterinary shop with medicines and a trained specialist, so community members can access these essential services without needing to travel to neighbouring villages.

Long-Term Impact

This project will give over 300 remote Maasai villagers living around Ormoti business hub improved affordable and convenient access to essential water, food and business services, improving their quality of life and health. Time saving benefits will be especially pronounced for women and children who would otherwise travel several kilometres to neighbouring villages to access these services. With this extra time they can focus on other livelihood activities or education closer to home.
