Summary

This project will upgrade and maintain the supply of clean water to more than 2000 Maasai villagers in North Eastern Tanzania, for drinking, cooking, cleaning and livestock rearing. In this region, surface water is scarce for 8 months of the year, and this solar borehole provides the only source of clean water. This project will help the community to pay for additional distribution points, bringing water access closer to their homes, as well as maintaining and repairing existing pipes and tanks.

Challenge

In North Eastern Tanzania, surface water is almost non-existent for 8 months of the year. People walk over 5km in search of water, or must buy from boreholes which pump water from 200m underground. Previously powered by diesel generators, high maintenance fees and increasing diesel costs are encouraging communities to switch to cost saving, reliable and clean solar energy. Sinonik village must repay a loan for their new solar system, and face ongoing distribution maintenance and upgrade costs.

Solution

This project will contribute to the costs of the existing solar system installed at Sinonik village, relieving the community of their monthly loan repayments burden. It will also contribute towards additional system upgrades that the community have planned, including adding more distribution points to reduce the distance that individuals have to travel to collect water, as well as repairing existing pipes and tanks, and paying the water operator's salary.

Long-Term Impact

With the upgraded renewable solar energy system installed, the community will save over $3000 a year from no longer needing to pay for diesel for water pumping. These significant savings will allow them to better prepare for general solar system maintenance, pipe repairs, and water distribution infrastructure upgrades, bringing water access points even closer to people, saving women and children time. With continual access to clean, safe drinking water, water-borne diseases will also decrease.
