From Vulnerability to Strength: Supporting Children, Youth

Shanthi Maargam (meaning“PathwaystoPeace” in Sinhala and Tamil) is a registered not-for-profit organization established in 2016 to build a safer, more compassionate Sri Lanka. We work with children, adolescents, and youth aged06 –29 from urban poor communities in Sri Lanka. helping them heal from trauma and develop emotional resilience through counseling, art and drama therapy, life skill training, and mindfulness. We empower young people to break cycles of violence and become agents of peace in their families and communities. Our programs welcome all ethnicities, religions, genders, and sexual orientations, ensuring every young person has the opportunity to heal, grow, and thrive. This period project focused on improving children’s well-being, education, and psychosocial resilience while strengthening family and community support systems.

Our Reach and Impact

  • 110–120childrensupportedmonthlythroughlife-skillsandeducationalprogramsatour Youth Center.
  • 190–200 children, 65–70 parents, and 35–40 teachers reached monthly through school and community outreach work. (This figure represents a combination of beneficiaries reached through multiple streams of our work, including both current and previous program activities).
  • 2,125 mental health hotline calls and 450+ confidential counselling sessions provided to childrenandyouthnationwideonSriLanka’sonlyfreetri-lingualyouthmentalhealthhotline last year. (This service has been temporarily suspended until funding becomes available).

A range of holistic activities were implemented to address the diverse needs of beneficiaries. Weekly meal programs provided nutritious food for children, ensuring not only their physical health but also a sense of care and belonging. This initiative also created livelihood opportunities for a mother from the community, empowering her through meaningful engagement. Regular community visits helped staff deepen relationships with participants, identify children and families in need of support, and expand access to Shanthi Maargam’s services.

At the Youth Center, a structured set of educational and life-skill sessions continued, including English and Sinhala language classes, Positive Youth Development (PYD) workshops, PATHS sessions, and sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) programs. These sessions built children’s confidence, improved communication and academic skills, and strengthened awareness of safety, rights, and health. Karate classes became a highlight of the program, fostering discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence among children. Notably, one young participant’s consistent effort led to his selection for a public karate performance, reflecting the program’s transformative effect on children’s growth and motivation. Parent support meetings provided a safe space for mothers to learn, share, and support one another in addressing stress, parenting challenges, and child protection issues. The discussions encouraged positive behavioral changes and strengthened relationships between parents and children. Increased parental involvement also contributed to better participation and learning outcomes for children.

Interns from various universities actively supported the project, gaining valuable field experience in community-based psychosocial work. Their involvement enriched program delivery and created opportunities for knowledge exchange between academic and community settings. Throughout the period, the Shanthi Maargam team demonstrated improved planning and coordination, implementing a structured activity calendar and better reporting systems. Despite challenges such as unstable community conditions, environmental hardships, and behavioral management issues among children, the team adapted through flexibility, smaller group sessions, and continuous engagement with the community. Overall, the project fostered stronger connections between children, parents, and vulnerable urban poor communities. promoting safety, learning, and well-being.

 A turn away from addiction

“I ama16-year-oldboyfromGothamipuraColombo. I was once caught in family-run drug networks, but through counseling and career guidance at Shanthi Maargam, I have turned my life aroundToday, I am studying motor mechanics at Jinarathana Technical College and have completely given up drug use. ShanthiMaargam’ssupporthastrulytransformed mylife."

From Classroom ActivitiestoPersonal Growth

“At the beginning of the school session, our Shanthi Maargam facilitators shared a story about four friends representing joy, sadness, anger, and fear. We were invited to act out these emotions, and I really enjoyed participating. Acting out the emotions helped me understand them better and made me feel more confident and involved in the activities. Since then, I have grown in other ways too. I became the Deputy Head Prefect at my school and started exploring new interests like photography. These workshops have helped me discover my strengths and try new things.”

STRINGS OF Hopes

“I am a 15-year-old girl from Gothamipura,Colombo. Music became my healing outlet and confidence booster.I come from a low-income family. My father is in prison, and my mother works as a janitor. I joined the guitar lessons at Shanthi Maargam and later saved my own money to buy a second-hand guitar. Now, I perform proudly at school events.”
