Sharing resources through our New Website and Virtual Classroom

By Katie Sill | Program Manager

Warmer weather is just around the corner, and that means grant writing season is upon us! We here at Story Tapestries are always on the lookout for funding opportunities that provide schools and communities with more access to the arts.  In the past, we have shared information about funding opportunities by phone, email, and our newsletter.  But in 2018, the platform for our Virtual Classroom will provide us with a place to share resources and direct parents and teachers to their local arts councils and other sources of funding in their area.

One of the biggest grant opportunities for many of the schools we work with is the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) Artist in Residency grant, which typically opens in the middle of February and is due in the middle of May, but that is just one example of the many opportunities that exist around the country!  County and State Arts Councils are a wonderful resource for programs like ours that promote the arts in and outside of the classroom. Because of that, every year we make sure to reach out to teachers in our network with the following grant-writing tips and tricks which we will also be able to share on our new website. If you are looking for ways to bring arts programs to a school near you, these are a wonderful place to start!

Don't know where to look?

Local and state arts councils are a great place to start for assemblies and artist-in-residencies!
  • There are many foundations, companies, and arts organizations that fund individual projects
  • You can always contact a local arts-in-education organization such as Story Tapestries to ask what opportunities are coming up in your area!

Not sure what to apply for?

  • Looking for a "spark" experience for your entire school? Many arts councils offer mini-grants for single or multiple assemblies!
  • Looking for in-depth experiences for your students? Arts councils offer grants for artist-in-residencies as well!
  • Professional Development? Some artist-in-residencygrants can include a PD component.  Contact us for more info!

Get a Head-Start!

  • Some grants are first-come-first-serve, and others are deadline-based.  No matter the type, applying early saves you the stress of last-minute deadlines!
  • The more time you give yourself to fine-tune your application, the stronger your application will be.
  • Take the time to assemble the right team to complete the grant - and choose your artist before their schedule fills up for the year!

We hope these tips make the idea of applying for a grant feel more accessible for the teachers in our communities. We're excited for our new website and virtual classroom to go live, and to be able to share this information with our community throughout the year!
