In older adulthood, vision ceases to be just a sense and becomes an essential resource for maintaining independence, safety, and connection with the environment. Good vision allows people to understand medical instructions, recognize obstacles when walking, identify loved ones, and fully enjoy their surroundings from home.
For older adults, preserving or restoring visual health represents a significant improvement in their quality of life, strengthening their autonomy and dignity. Adequate vision makes it easier to make decisions about their own care, actively participate in family and community life, and reduce risks such as falls, domestic accidents, social isolation, or cognitive decline.
At ACREC, every day we witness how timely care, specialized treatment, or surgical intervention in any ophthalmological subspecialty can transform a person's life. These actions allow them to regain their visual capacity, move around independently, perform daily activities such as cooking, reading, or simply going for a walk on their own, and fully enjoy their surroundings. It is a profound change that transcends the physical: it means restoring clarity, security, hope, and the possibility of feeling like an active part of society again.
Therefore, continuing to work for the visual health of older people is not only a professional duty, but also an act of respect, humanity, and justice towards those who have dedicated a lifetime of effort and commitment.
Thanks to your invaluable support, during September and October we had the opportunity to assist 33 people in vulnerable situations, giving them hope and clarity through ophthalmological procedures.
