Advancing Clean Water Access

By Ligia Gomez | Executive Assistant to Community Organizer

The Water Supply Project for Indigenous Communities in Sicalpa, Ecuador, has made significant strides toward its goal of providing clean drinking water and improved irrigation systems to the communities of Cotojuan and Huacona La Merced. To date, 60% of the project has been completed through the self-managed efforts of the Indigenous communities, showcasing their resilience and commitment to improving living conditions.

Achievements

  • Infrastructure Development: 60% of the necessary work, including the installation of initial piping and foundational infrastructure, has been completed.
  • Environmental Impact: The project has prioritized environmental sustainability, with 128,000 plants cultivated in Huaconas and Qolloyctun to support ecosystem restoration.

Challenges

  • Funding Gap: Despite the progress, a lack of financial resources remains a significant hurdle. The project still requires $9,750 to reach its total funding goal of $9,850.
  • Migration Issues: Water scarcity has led to increased migration, leaving primarily older community residents.
  • Resource Needs: Additional resources are needed to complete the installation of water tanks, valves, and piping.

Next Steps

  • Completion Timeline: With adequate funding, the project is expected to be completed within the next two months.
  • Planned Installations:
    • 2,000 meters of new piping and a water storage tank in Cotojuan to provide clean drinking water for 350 residents.
    • 2,000 meters of piping and sprinkler valves in Huacona La Merced to improve irrigation for 400 residents.
  • Technical Support: Collaboration with the National University of Chimborazo will ensure the sustainability of the water systems.

Long-Term Impact

The successful completion of this project will:

  • Improve community health by reducing waterborne diseases.
  • Enhance food security through better agricultural productivity.
  • Promote environmental conservation and responsible water management.
