Celebrating International Day for Rural Women

By Cynthia Ouedraogo | Trustee

Dear Valued Supporters and Generous Donors,

Your unwavering contributions have been instrumental in catalyzing profound transformations in the lives of smallholder women farmers in Binde. As we commemorate the International Day for Rural Women on October 15, we extend our deepest appreciation while providing you with an uplifting update on the tangible and positive changes your support has made possible.

Honoring the Resilience of Rural Women:
On this auspicious occasion, we joyfully celebrate the indomitable resilience, boundless strength, and unwavering dedication of rural women. These remarkable women form the bedrock of their communities, acting as custodians of family well-being and stewards of the environment. Today, we pay tribute to their extraordinary commitment to agriculture, a commitment that persists despite the myriad challenges they confront.

A Jewel in Our Crown:
We are overjoyed to share the outstanding news that Madjalia Seynou, our esteemed Executive Director, has been honored with the prestigious 2023 Women Creativity in Rural Life Award by the Women’s World Summit Foundation (WWSF) in Switzerland. This remarkable recognition underscores Madjalia's extraordinary leadership and her relentless commitment to the cause of sustainable rural development.

Special Acknowledgment:
Our heartfelt gratitude extends to our exceptional FarmSahel team laboring on the ground. Your tireless efforts and unwavering dedication have translated into extraordinary achievements. This milestone reflects your resolute commitment to our shared mission.

Project Highlights:
This year, with your invaluable support, women farmers have embarked on diversifying their agricultural endeavors. The addition of rice and taro to their repertoire, alongside the cowpea they traditionally cultivate, not only expands their agricultural skill set but also contributes to enhanced food security. Our substantial compost production is paving the way for the restoration of 120 hectares of degraded land, revitalizing soil health, and arming farmers to confront the challenges of climate change.

In this momentous month, our farmers will embark on the cultivation of off-season vegetables, facilitated by your support. The availability of water resources has made this possible, and it marks a significant milestone. This new endeavor will introduce onions, cabbage, and lettuce to the list of crops they cultivate.

The journey we have undertaken together is nothing short of remarkable. From cultivating cowpeas exclusively, we now proudly yield rice, taro, cabbage, onions, and lettuce. This not only ensures nutritious sustenance for women and their families but also underscores our commitment to soil health through crop rotation, a fundamental tenet of regenerative agriculture.

A Grateful Salute:
Once again, we extend our deepest gratitude for your steadfast support. Your boundless generosity is catalyzing life-changing experiences and illuminating the path toward a more vibrant and sustainable future for rural women in Burkina Faso.
