Widowhood in Nepal: From Exclusion to Empowerment
Widowhood in Nepal is not only the loss of a husband. For many women, it marks the beginning of social isolation, economic hardship, and increased vulnerability to abuse, exploitation and trafficking. Deep rooted cultural beliefs still tie a woman’s identity and security to her husband. When he dies, she often loses her status, income, and protection overnight.
At Bahini Educare Foundation (BEF), we work with single and widowed women at this critical turning point in their lives. Our mission is to prevent all forms of abuse, exploitation and trafficking of girls and women. Over the years, we have seen a real shift: families once trapped in survival are now moving toward self-reliance and hope.
The Reality of Widowhood in Nepal
Most single women in Nepal face multiple and overlapping challenges:
Without support, widowhood often leads to long-term poverty. Daughters are pushed into early marriage or unsafe labour. Sons leave school to earn daily wages. Mothers carry heavy emotional and financial burdens alone.
This is the cycle BEF is working to change.
Our Approach: Support with Purpose
BEF’s response is holistic and long term. We do not provide only short term relief. We walk with families until they are strong enough to stand independently.
Through the EduCare Family Program, we provide:
Every family is supported with one clear goal: empowerment, not dependency.
Our Impact
Today, the picture is very different from when these families first entered our program. Instead of living day to day, families are planning for the future.
In 2025 alone, six EduCare families reached sustainability and successfully exited the program. They no longer depend on BEF support. They are building their own secure lives.
This transition from vulnerability to independence is the strongest sign of lasting change.
Sustainability: Building Long-Term Security
With changing times and our success and learnings we are now looking at sustainability. It has become central to our work with widowed and single women. Besides regular support we are providing:
This creates a continuous cycle of empowerment and transformation.
A Changing Narrative
Widowhood in Nepal has long been associated with silence and suffering. Today, that narrative is beginning to change. What once seemed like permanent hardship is becoming a story of resilience and renewal.
Why This Work Matters
Widowhood remains one of Nepal’s most invisible crises. But transformation is possible when support is comprehensive and rooted in respect.
From exclusion to inclusion.
From poverty to self-reliance.
From fear to confidence.
This is what Bahini Educare Foundation stands for.
We make lives important.
We give single women a reason to live with hope.
We prevent abuse, exploitation, and trafficking by building strength within families.
It’s simple.
It’s simply BEF.
With warm regards,
