We are responding to the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Davao Oriental Province by mobilizing local women as volunteers with our guidance in order to provide short and long-term relief and recovery to mostly women-led households. We will focus on 7 hard to reach barrios in the municipality of Manay targeting 2,500 individuals. Our response will be providing immediate relief via food supply and hygiene supplies and then providing small farm-based livelihoods.
A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck in the province of Davao Oriental. Thousands have been displaced with so many dwellings damaged and destroyed. Countless livelihoods have been lost and communities live in fear of aftershocks. This earthquake is so far the strongest that occur in the country in more than 15 years. Women-led households are the most vulnerable and needs immediate relief and recovery response.
Initially we will be providing robust water filters in order to ensure clean, safe drinking water and to prevent the occurrence of water-borne diseases cause by bacteria. Most of the water system are non-functioning and there is the threat of a water-borne epidemic that needs to be responded to. We will also repair damaged toilets in order to prevent open-defecation. Finally, we will launch agriculture-based livelihoods in order to provide sustainable income and nutrition.
Our intervention complement that done by other organizations only that we are focused more in helping women and girls who are more affected by this disaster. We aim for long-term relief and recovery so that local communities will be improved and developed.
