About the project:
-----------------------
The project aims to provide emergency medical care, protection, food, and clean water to meet the immediate needs of animals in zoos in Yemen. This project aims to provide emergency medical care, food, and clean water to animals in zoos in Yemen. Animals in zoos in Yemen are suffering from difficult conditions due to the ongoing conflict in the country. Many of these animals are in dire need of emergency medical care, food, and clean water to survive. This project aims to provide these essential services to animals in zoos across Yemen. This will be achieved by identifying zoos in need of emergency assistance and providing emergency medical care to sick and injured animals in these zoos. Food and clean water will be provided to all animals in these zoos on a regular basis. A long-term plan will be developed for the ongoing care and maintenance of these animals, including the establishment of a network of animal welfare organizations and volunteers to provide ongoing support. The project aims to uphold the principles of justice by ensuring that all animals, regardless of species or origin, have equitable access to life-saving interventions. This entails meeting the urgent needs of every animal in distress, fostering a sense of responsibility for their welfare, and promoting the equitable distribution of resources to enhance their chances of survival.
Activities Implemented in the First Quarter of 2024 (February 1 - April 30, 2024)
SANID's Nature Conservation Unit implemented the following activities:
Continuous assessment of the parks' emergency aid needs, including animal health, nutrition, infrastructure, and staffing.
Conducting interviews and workshops with key stakeholders (staff, leadership, and partners) to identify needs and priorities.
Two meetings were held with official and community stakeholders in the targeted parks to assess the animals' conditions and identify potential obstacles and risks resulting from lack of support.
Developing a plan to protect the animals in the park and improve their health and nutritional status, as well as the park's appearance, to evaluate the progress and implementation of the plan.
Two veterinarians were assigned for a month to treat several animals, providing nutritional supplements, vaccines, and vitamins.
Continued provision of detergents, disinfectants, and treatments to treat injured animals.
Continued monitoring of the conditions in the targeted parks and ongoing monitoring of the animals' experiences. The health conditions of the various animals in the parks, their care, identifying any damage they may suffer, and submitting reports to the relevant authorities.
Hold two awareness sessions among the community surrounding the parks, as well as relevant official and community bodies, on the need to preserve biodiversity in the Republic of Yemen.
Provide food and meat to some of the park animals intermittently, according to available resources.
Major Challenges and Difficulties:
• Scarcity of resources and limited support for these activities.
• Low treatment and food due to limited financial resources.
Recommendations:
• Increase financial support to provide adequate food and medicine for the park animals.
• Improve the park's appearance and rehabilitate seating areas.
• Provide salaries to park employees so they can perform their duties in caring for the parks.
