This project will build a Community Center for Sustainability and Climate Change Adaptation for Indigenous and rural communities-especially women-in the lower Gaira River basin. This Center will include an endangered tree species nursery, a public library with free internet, a processing room with machinery for non-timber forest products, a community shop, and ongoing training to support climate adaptation and sustainable business for a dignified life.
In Colombia's Caribbean region, Indigenous and farming families face extreme vulnerability due to limited job opportunities, poor education, lack of rights awareness, and scarce access to information. Women are especially affected. Climate change worsens their situation, threatening food security. Our project will support 100 women and their families in rural Gaira, helping them adapt to climate change and build sustainable livelihoods.
Our Community Center will include a library and computer room with digital literacy training to improve access to information. With a focus on women, it will offer ongoing education in sustainability, personalized guidance to adapt crops to climate change for food security, and training in value-added processing of raw materials. The center will also include a processing room, business planning support, and a community shop linked to hotels and green markets.
Women's Economic Empowerment: Women will gain skills, resources, and market access to generate sustainable income, strengthening their autonomy and leadership within the community. Their families will be better prepared to face climate change through improved agricultural practices, ensuring long-term food security and environmental sustainability. The Center will be a permanent hub for knowledge, cooperation, fostering long-term social cohesion & access to opportunities for future generations
