Phase 2 of The Wat Mano Refurbishment Complete!

Dear Supporters,

This quarter, the GVI Trust in Laos has finished Phase 2 of the Wat Mano refurbishment project, has provided a scholarship for a student to study in China, has continued to provide classroom rental for students to gain greater access to educational opportunities and has begun fundraising for scholarships for the sponsorship program for the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year.

Phase 2 of the Wat Mano Refurbishment Project continued to focus on UNSDG’s 4, 8 and 9. After Phase 1 was completed last quarter, where we paid a local carpenter to build 20 desks and 20 benches and had a local electrician install new wiring and fans throughout the classrooms, we set out to complete Phase 2. Throughout the summer holidays, local builders replaced the walls, floor boards and veranda. The students will return in September for the new school year with a more safe, positive learning environment. We were also pleased to welcome Cedric from GlobalGiving to visit out project and to see the ongoing work at Wat Mano.

In August, we also provided a scholarship to a student to study at university in China. Mr. Lee has been sponsored by the GVI Trust at Chinese School in Luang Prabang for the last 3 years. He applied to a university in China and successfully received a place! Through generous donations, the GVI Trust has sponsored all of Mr. Lee’s educational costs including school fee, uniform and educational materials. Well done to Mr. Lee for his continued dedication to his studies and future!

Finally, the GVI Trust continues to support educational opportunities through finances for classroom rental in Luang Prabang over the summer period that has increased educational opportunities for 159 students and with fundraising for the sponsorships program for the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year.

Overall, this quarter, the GVI Trust in Laos has completed Phase 2 of the Wat Mano Refurbishment project, supporting local carpenters and builders to while providing a more safe and positive learning environment for the Novice Monk students that attend the school. It has also provided an important scholarship opportunity to a diligent student to study abroad. Finally, it has supported educational opportunities through classroom rental and fundraising for sponsorships. Desks, Chairs and an International Conference

To all of our supporters,

During the last 3 months, the GVI Trust’s focus in Laos has been on two major projects.

The first is the Wat Mano Refurbishment Project which focuses on UNSDG’s 4, 8 and 9. The state of the classrooms, desks and chairs at the school had begun to negatively impact the students learning experience, as such a proposal was written in phases to fundraise and refurbish the school.

We are pleased to share that this quarter, Phase 1 of the project has been completed! Through generous donations, we were able to pay a local carpenter to build 20 desks and 20 benches and have a local electrician install new wiring and fans throughout the classrooms. Through June and July Phase 2 of the project will begin where local builders will be replacing the walls, floor boards and veranda while the students are on summer break. We look forward to welcoming them back to refurbished rooms and a safe and positive learning space!

The second focus of the GVI Trust in Laos has been providing 2 scholarship opportunities for two of the Lao leaders of the GVI-Days for Girls Menstrual Health Initiative which focuses on UNSDG 3,4,5 and 8. This scholarship supported two females to attend and represent Laos on Menstrual health at a DFG Menstrual health conference in Melbourne, Australia.

On the eve of International Menstrual Health Day, Tarn and Soua, who recently successfully completed certifications with Days for Girls and became two of three existing Ambassadors of Women’s Health in Laos, travelled to Australia with Laos Program Leyla Isin and Community Liaison Lyly. Together they represented Laos on menstrual health and engaged with leaders from Days for Girls Australia, DFG Founder and CEO Celeste Mergens and DFG Chapter Director Tiffany Larson on current international challenges and ways forward regarding this important issue. They also underwent advanced workshops on sewing the DFG reusable kits, DFG team leadership, distribution, monitoring and evaluation and running a microenterprise.

They have now returned to Laos to continue working on the GVI Laos Menstrual Health Initiative, that to date has reached 421 women and girls with menstrual health education and reusable menstrual health kits since June 2017. They will begin implementing phase two of this initiative in the coming months and will be working on using the knowledge they gained at the conference to start a DFG microenterprise as well!

Menstrual Health solutions and education are pivotal for women and girls lives, opportunities and their own empowerment. Join us in raising awareness and taking action regarding this important issue today and everyday.Here's to a world where no woman or girl is limited or ashamed during menstruation!

Our sponsorships program is always ongoing and the students’ sponsorships are usually on a yearly basis. We have completed Phase 1 of the WAT MANO refurbishment project and are currently raising funds to implement phase 2.

$25 for Basic Needs support for 1 student
$70 for 4 students for 2 months at MEC Nam Thuam (until they graduate)
$540 for 6 students at the Bright Centre Nam Thuam for 1 year
$564 for 3 students for 1 year at the Bright Centre Luang Prabang
$500 for the annual donation to the Luang Prabang children’s library
$650 for the classroom Rental for Sept-Dec 2017
$350 for a sewing Machine for WEP
$1074 from funds raised during a Mini Challenge for salary of 2 staff at the Nan District Learning Centre for 1 year
$2000 that was donated for the WMO refurbishment project phase 1
