The Amakondera ladies’ flute ensemble continued their success at the 2025 Irish Association of Kigali’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival. Their performance earned first place and a cash award, as well as the delighted cheers of the audience!
The Amakondera flutes were introduced into Rwanda hundreds of years ago, and both men and women of the people historically known as “Batwa” became highly proficient. Made from bone and wood, the flutes provide a lilting and melodic accompaniment to the drums, and in bygone days, the musicians played soothing tunes in the evening to help the king relax after a long day of kingly duties.
Now, the young women of Cyaruzinge Village carry on this tradition and share their success with one another and with you, their loyal supporters! Thank you!
