Buy Chickens for street children in Nepal

It has been very eventful couple of weeks in Nepal.

First, the government banned all social media making communication between our staff and communities quite challenging. Then the Nepali youth reacted to the ban and to the corruption in the country in general by organising biggest ever protests all over the country. There was quite a lot of violence as a result, people died, buildings got burned. But the old government got overthrown and now Nepal has its first female Prime Minister. This is a temporary measure and elections will take place in March 2026. During the protests we had to pause all our field activities and community classes. Luckily, everything is back to normal and all our staff and children are safe.

All is back to normal now. In fact, our resident pigeon welcomed new chickens to our home so even more eggs should be coming soon.

The boys are so proud of their garden now so during their time off school they help make it all tidy and grow nice vegetables, they feed the chickens, help with cleaning of the chicken house, and recently they were helping with the repainting of our walls outside – and had tonnes of fun doing that!

Sadly, there was a huge cholera outbreak in Birgunj not long ago so the schools were shut and our boys were receiving classes at the home. Luckily, all our children and staff kept healthy and we delivered a number of training sessions to the local communities in villages around Birgunj where the disease was spreading fast. We also provided the same training to our boys and also children and staff at all our projects. Seems to have worked and nobody caught it!

We are so proud of our boys now, they are all growing up so fast and developing into very responsible and caring young men (well, some of them have a few more years to go but the change in them all is amazing). The bamboos that we planted by the outside wall have grown so much and they are protecting our children’s home from the outside dust and noise and give us much needed shade in the hot season. The fruit trees are also now pretty tall so we are getting a lot of shade and a lot of fruit. In the meantime, the boys are helping a lot in the garden and now they are having competitions who grows better vegetables – as a result, they are now eating a lot of fresh delicious veggies. We couldn’t be happier. Our chickens are still very happy running around in their part of the garden and the resident pigeon does not leave them for a minute. 

The boys’ school year started in April so they are back studying now after a bit of a break. We moved most of them back to their old school as the one they started attending a year before was not preparing them for life at all. They are happy again and are studying very hard, and enjoying learning a lot. That makes all of us very, very happy. 

The monsoon is approaching now so we’re getting ready for that – on one hand it will be really nice to get a break from the scorching heat but the boys will need to get used to walking in the mud everywhere again. They do always ensure that they have some fun with that well though!
