Behind the scenes

By Kathy Burgoine, | Neonatal Lead, Born on the Edge

Behind the Scenes, not every moment makes it to the spotlight — but every moment matters. Today, we’re sharing a glimpse behind the scenes in the neonatal unit. Behind every breath a baby takes, there’s care you don’t always see: routine equipment checks, quiet repairs, careful cleaning, and precise calibration.

Even the most advanced equipment—like oxygen concentrators and CPAP machines—needs human hands and hearts to keep it running. Every month, we check the oxygen levels from every concentrator and breathing machine. We do this because the chemicals inside them—the ones that generate life-saving oxygen—don’t last forever. They need timely replacement to keep working as they should. To keep saving lives. This is the work that saves lives. Not just in emergencies, but every hour, every day. Your support keeps these machines breathing, so our babies can, too.

Last week, we checked every oxygen concentrator in our care—and discovered that two of them need urgent additional maintenance. The issue? Worn-out sieve beds, the core component that allows these machines to deliver life-saving oxygen.
These repairs are not optional. For the premature and sick newborns who rely on these machines, uninterrupted oxygen is critical.
We’re asking for your help to:
  • Repair and maintain essential oxygen concentrators
  • Replace worn sieve beds to restore full function
  • Ensure that every baby continues to receive the oxygen they need to survive
  • Your support keeps these machines running—and keeps tiny babies breathing.
