1. Introduction
The Venerable Sydney Children’s Wellness Center (VSCWC) continues to advance its community-impact initiative through the development of the farmland located in Warri, Delta State. This project is central to our long-term goal of empowering rural families, supporting local education, and creating sustainable opportunities for income generation.
Over the past several weeks, we have made important strides in establishing relationships with the local village community and identifying collaborative paths forward.
2. Community Engagement & Meetings
We recently held a series of productive meetings with the village leadership and local farmers. These discussions were aimed at understanding:
Their current farming practices
The types of crops that thrive in the area
How access to farmland can directly support their livelihoods
Opportunities to strengthen education for their children through improved income
The farmers expressed strong interest in partnering with VSCWC, and they deeply appreciate the potential of using the land to provide more stable means of supporting their families.
3. Proposed Partnership Framework
A key focus of our discussions has been outlining a mutually beneficial arrangement where:
Farmers’ Use of the Land
Farmers will cultivate the land to produce crops for their own livelihood and economic benefit. The expectation is that the increased harvest and income will help them:
Improve household nutrition
Pay school fees for their children
Access basic healthcare
Build long-term financial stability
Commitments Expected From the Farmers
VSCWC is exploring a simple, respectful, and sustainable set of commitments that ensures responsible use of the land:
Land Security:
The farmers will help safeguard the land by monitoring activity, preventing trespassing, and reporting any issues promptly.
Transparency of Activities:
They will keep VSCWC informed of any farming activities occurring on the land, including crop cycles, new users, or changes in arrangements.
Regular Communication:
A communication channel will be established with a designated community representative to ensure updates flow consistently.
Responsible Stewardship:
The land must be maintained in good condition, with farming practices that do not damage the long-term fertility or structure of the soil.
These terms were received positively, and the farmers expressed willingness to collaborate constructively.
4. Next Steps
The following actions are planned to move the partnership into a formal operational stage:
Finalize the partnership agreement with clearly defined commitments and expectations.
Create a community liaison system to ensure structured communication.
Conduct a baseline survey of available farmland, soil readiness, and initial crop plans.
Launch the pilot farming season with a small group of selected farmers.
Begin documentation for monitoring progress and measuring the project’s social impact (education, household welfare, income improvement).
5. Conclusion
We are pleased with the progress made so far. The engagement with the village farmers has been encouraging, and we believe this partnership will create meaningful and lasting impact for local families. By granting responsible access to the land and building trust with the community, VSCWC is taking a significant step toward fulfilling its mission of empowering children, strengthening households, and contributing to sustainable rural development.
We will continue to provide updates as the project advances into the next phase.
