Introduction
Jobs are hard to come by, so parents often cannot pay their school fees, with the employment rate being 38.7% as of 2022. The minimum wage is R23 per hour, which is just $10.50 per day. All of the parents at Bhongolethu fall into this category. These parents are in survival mode constantly, so putting a meal on the table for their family is more important that paying school fees.
Report
Bhongolethu Foundation is a non-profit organization that offers quality education to children in the community, Masiphumelele, Cape Town. Children are fortunate to be a part of the family at Bhongolethu. Sponsorship is a large part of Bhongolethu's daily functioning. When children receive sponsorship, their education security is taken care of.
This program helps parents keep their child at Bhongolethu, where they receive quality education and it helps the child acquire the education they deserve. Why should only privileged children be allowed to have access to better education? "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," Nelson Mandela.
