In rural southern Ethiopia, Melaku plays a crucial role in a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) project aimed at fighting trachoma, a painful blinding eye disease. This project involves distributing Zithromax tablets, syrup, and eye ointment to every household treating and preventing trachoma.
Melaku is a 35-year-old farmer from the Gurage Zone, where he grows coffee and teff flour, which is used to make 'injera,' a traditional Ethiopian flatbread. For over four years, he has also worked with MDAs in the area.
Melaku has a personal reason for joining the fight against trachoma. He lost sight in his left eye after being hit with a stick, which led to an infection. This experience drives him to help his community take better care of their eyes.
As a Facilitator, Melaku visits homes, gathers people together, and helps distribute the medication tp treat and prevent trachoma. He uses his story to encourage others to take the treatment and practice good hygiene.
Melaku says, “I want to help eliminate trachoma. I teach my community, ‘Look at me and take care of your eyes.’ I tell my children to wash their faces every morning and make sure they take the medicine needed.”
Melaku's dedication is inspiring. His hope is to see trachoma eliminated from Ethiopia, and he works hard among his community, especially with children and mothers, to make this a reality.
Thanks to your support, people like Melaku can continue this important work and help protect their communities from trachoma.
