From Tragedy to Hope: Why EleSense Must Keep Expanding

At 6:30 p.m. in Mongpong near Sevok (West Bengal), tragedy struck once again recently. A speeding train — the Kanchan Kanya Express — collided with an elephant, leaving behind a haunting silence where there should have been the sound of gentle footsteps through the forest.

Why? This corridor does not yet have EleSense — our life-saving detection system that alerts train drivers when elephants are nearby. The absence of this crucial technology cost another innocent life.

Yet, there is hope. According to our latest reports, EleSense has already helped prevent close to 2,000 potential elephant-train collisions across six high-risk locations — including tea plantations that have become safe passageways for elephants navigating between fragmented forests. In these areas, elephants and trains now coexist more safely. Mothers and calves cross together. Herds move freely. What was once a scene of tragedy is now a landscape of coexistence.

We couldn’t have done this without you. Thanks to your compassion and generosity, this phase of the EleSense project has been fully funded. We are now developing a third-generation EleSense technology, which is currently being piloted. Once we test its success rate, we plan to launch another campaign in the coming months to bring this innovation to more vulnerable corridors.

Meanwhile, we are thrilled to share that, in collaboration with our longstanding partner in Odisha state, Paribartan, and local tribal communities, we are securing and rewilding 50 acres of farmland. This initiative will prevent human encroachment, including the deadly train tracks, and restore vital elephant habitat, allowing these magnificent beings to move freely between forests.

Each EleSense installation, each acre of land restored, and each elephant saved is a testament to what compassion and science can achieve together. But our work is far from over.

Please continue to support our projects. Your contribution is more than a donation — it’s a lifeline that keeps these gentle giants safe, preserves their ancient forests, and ensures that future generations inherit a world where elephants still roam free.

Together, we can turn tragedy into triumph — and hope into lasting change.

Thank you so much from the bottom our hearts for your unwavering support.

With deep respect and gratitude,

Yours truly,

Sangita
