The IsraAID Emergency Response team has been working across the state of Morelos, Mexico, which was badly affected by September’s earthquake. The team has focused on specific towns, including Jojutla, Zacatepec and Cuernavaca, and identified several key areas of need:
Temporary learning spaces:
The earthquake affected 1,527 schools in the state of Morelos alone; which is 84% of the state’s schools. 40 schools collapsed entirely, and many suffered severe damage. The reconstruction phase for all the affected schools will reportedly take up to two years.
In response to the urgent need for safe learning spaces, IsraAID, in partnership with CADENA, installed temporary classrooms throughout the state of Morelos. The team has set up 324 tents since the start of its intervention, working with community leaders, school authorities and parents, and benefitting a total of 7,904 students in kindergarten, primary and secondary education.
“Our children had not received classes for almost three months. Just like all children, they have a right to access education, and a right to return to a safe and stimulating learning environment. Our school might be damaged, our homes might be destroyed, but our hearts, dignity and determination are not. Thank you for helping to bring our children back to school and for supporting us in fighting for our children’s right to education,” said the parent committee of a school in Cuernavaca. IsraAID installed 16 tents in this school in order for the 620 students to be able to return to class.
Safe water, and promotion of hygiene and sanitation practices in schools:
The new, temporary classrooms currently lack sufficient sanitation and hygiene facilities – including bathrooms and hand-washing stations- which has led to an increased risk of water-borne and sanitation-related diseases among children. So, IsraAID began to construct bathrooms and hand-washing stations in a school in Chamilpa, Cuernavaca. The school, built in the early 1960s, suffered extreme damage.
Since the earthquake, the students had been studying in an alternative site with open-air classrooms and only one bathroom for 1,027 students and 85 school staff. IsraAID has since installed 18 temporary classrooms in the school’s original grounds, and has started building six bathroom units and four hand-washing stations.
In compromised hygiene circumstances, the installation of the sanitation facilities needs to be accompanied by a community-based, awareness-raising campaign regarding hygiene practices, and so the team has run several hygiene promotion workshops.
Family mental health support program:
School staff, parents and families are in urgent need of support to deal with post-trauma mental health issues, and to learn how to build resilience in both families and school communities.
IsraAID’s mental health professionals ran multiple training sessions to support school directors and teachers from the most-affected schools in the region, preparing for their return to class. The program gave the educational staff key tools and knowledge in how to provide mental health support to their students, post-disaster. The team has so far trained over 500 school directors, psychologists, and teachers.
Next steps:
IsraAID will continue to support affected communities in Morelos, making sure we can reach the most vulnerable populations.
Activities will include:
Thanks for your ongoing support - more updates to follow!!!
