From Garden to Table: Growing Confidence

By Miriam Kariuki | Project Coordinator

At Agatha Amani House, food is more than just nourishment; it is empowerment. This quarter, our journey of empowering survivors through food security has taken a vibrant step forward. At Agatha Amani House, survivors have actively engaged in every stage of food production, from planting indigenous vegetables like managu and sukuma wiki to harvesting fresh produce used in daily meals. Through this hands-on involvement, survivors are not only feeding themselves and their children but also learning sustainable agricultural practices.

One of the most inspiring outcomes of this initiative is how survivors are beginning to dream beyond the shelter. Several women have expressed aspirations to start small kitchen gardens or engage in market gardening when they transition back into the community. One survivor shared, “I never imagined I could grow my own food. Now I want to teach my children to do the same.” These words speak to the deeper transformation happening, where trauma is slowly being replaced by vision, capability, and hope.In addition to farming, survivors also engaged in daily meal preparation, incorporating the fresh produce they helped grow. This holistic process, from soil to plate, offers a powerful sense of contribution and ownership. We have seen firsthand how this contributes not just to physical well-being, but also to emotional stability and financial empowerment.

We are continually exploring ways to enhance this initiative, including introducing income-generating components such as selling surplus produce and training women in food preservation techniques like sun-drying vegetables and making homemade jam. With your support, we hope to expand our farm's impact and make the dream of food security and self-sufficiency a lasting reality for every survivor who passes through our doors.

Thank you for helping us feed not just stomachs, but spirits, too
