Find Families for Older Colombian Orphan Children

This summer, from June 26 to August 2, Kidsave launched our annual Summer Miracles campaign—a movement powered by community, connection, and the unwavering belief that every child deserves a family.

Across cities and small towns, youth from Colombian foster care arrived in the U.S. and were welcomed into host families who opened their hearts and homes. Together, they shared simple, beautiful moments: pool parties, beach outings, movie nights, and family dinners. Laughter echoed across backyards. New bonds began to form around campfires, hikes, and game nights. These weren’t just summer activities—they were building blocks of trust, belonging, and possibility.

Social media lit up with updates from host families who celebrated each child’s personality, bravery, and joy. We shared stories of transformation—of a teen trying s’mores for the first time, of a quiet child opening up during a game of Uno, of hosts witnessing a child’s first time riding a bike or watching fireworks. These weren’t just updates—they were evidence that when a child feels safe and seen, something powerful happens.

But while many children took steps closer to finding permanent families, some still wait—and time is running out.

Stories Still Unfolding: Youth Who Need a Family

Luca (17) and Avery (15), a sibling pair, captured hearts this summer with their loyalty to one another and their creativity. Luca is a deep thinker—into photography, graphic design, and cars. He draws inspiration from Tim Burton and dreams of a future in the arts. Avery is playful, kind-hearted, and dreams of becoming a veterinarian. Together, they love music, movies, and being around animals. But their story is urgent: Luca is nearing the age where adoption will no longer be an option. This is their last chance to find a forever family.

Host families described them as thoughtful, respectful, and joyfully quirky:

“Luca is goofy once you get to know him, and Avery is full of life. They’re strong, grounded, and sweet kids.”

Elle (12) arrived with a quiet confidence. She loves scary movies, drawing, and game nights. Her hosts noted how quickly she connected with others, how easily she adapted, and how beautifully she embraced family life.

“Elle has a brave spirit. She’s calm, respectful, and always willing to try something new.”

Jacob (12) stood out for his helpfulness. He loved pitching in around the house, trying new foods, and being active outdoors. A fan of baseball and fishing, Jacob’s curiosity led him to explore every new opportunity with open arms.

“He wants to grow. He listens, learns, and brings a peaceful energy into our home.”

Daisy (11) lit up her host family’s world. With a big smile, an even bigger heart, and a love for reading, music, and swimming, Daisy made every moment count. She loved cooking spicy meals and laughing through movie nights.

“She is a joy—goofy, sweet, and full of laughter. She brings out the best in everyone.”

These five young people are still waiting for their forever families—and they’re not giving up hope. Neither are we.

Looking Ahead: Winter Hosting & How You Can Help

As we close the chapter on Summer Miracles 2025, our work is far from over. We’re now preparing for Winter Miracles, running December 3–28, and currently recruiting host families to welcome youth for the holidays.

But beyond homes, we need help to fund travel for kids like Luca, Avery, Elle, Jacob, and Daisy—so they can have another chance this winter.

Here’s how you can be part of their story:

For older children growing up in foster care and orphanages, the opportunity to find a loving, potential adoptive family can seem impossible. Kidsave’s Summer Miracles program is changing that reality by connecting older children from Colombia with families in the United States who are open to adoption. Through a five-week summer visit, these children experience life with a family and form meaningful relationships that can lead to permanent placements. The impact of Summer Miracles is profound—just ask Michael, Mariana, and Yara, whose lives were forever changed by this program. 

Michael Robinson will never forget the summer that changed his life. At 14, he and his sister, Mariana, left Colombia for the U.S. through Summer Miracles. Living with their host, Ruth, in Virginia felt surreal, but they embraced the opportunity for a fresh start. 

That summer, they met Tatiana and Lamont Robinson, who felt an instant connection. When the siblings returned to Colombia, the couple knew they wanted to adopt them. Three months into the process, Tatiana learned she was pregnant, but there was no question—they were already family. A month before their baby’s arrival, they traveled to Colombia to bring Michael and Mariana home. 

Adjusting to a new life wasn’t always easy. After two years in Florida, Michael returned to Virginia to finish high school. Inspired by his adoptive grandfather, he joined the Marines, which shaped him in unexpected ways. Today, he cherishes his family, and Mariana, inspired by his journey, plans to join the Army. 

“Everything can change as long as you're willing to change it,” Michael says. “And don’t be afraid to ask for help—there are good people everywhere.” 

Four years ago, Yara’s life in Colombia looked very different. Today, she’s a thriving teen in Southern California, thanks to community, patience, and a little serendipity. 

In 2022, Jennifer and Brandon planned to host a child through Summer Miracles, but their match fell through. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Yara’s original host family had to cancel. In a twist of fate, the Nortons stepped in. They never expected the girl they hosted for five weeks would become their daughter. 

That summer, Yara experienced family life for the first time—going to the beach, visiting amusement parks, and simply being part of a loving home. The Nortons initially planned to help her find an adoptive family, but their bond was undeniable. When they decided to adopt, Yara burst into tears. “I can’t believe it!” she said. 

Eighteen months later, her adoption was finalized. Yara has flourished—making friends, excelling in school, and even surprising her family by joining the swim team. Through it all, she remains connected to her Colombian roots, regularly meeting her best friend, Matteo, another Summer Miracles alum, for family dinners. 

Jennifer encourages potential hosts to take the leap: “Go in with an open heart. If it’s meant to be, it will be. Don’t let fear stop you—you never know what could come of it.” 

Through Kidsave’s Summer Miracles program, children like Michael, Mariana, and Yara have found loving families and futures filled with possibility. Every summer, new children come to the U.S. with the hope of making meaningful connections. Hosting a child can change their life—and yours.
