Stop the hunger

By Maisie Mayne | Fundraising intern

The Problem: Not Enough Water, Especially for Some

Imagine you're really thirsty, but there's no water fountain nearby. That's kind of what it's like in some parts of South Africa. There are a few big problems:

  • Not Enough Water: South Africa is facing a water crisis, meaning there isn't enough water for everyone.
  • Unequal Sharing: Some people have lots of water, while others have very little, especially those living in poorer areas or rural places.
  • Farming Struggles: Many people in South Africa grow food to eat or sell, but they need water to do this. When there's not enough water, they can't grow food, and that makes life really hard.

The Solution: Smart Farming with Less Water

This group has a clever idea to help schools grow food, even when there's not much water. They use something called "innovative agricultural solutions," which is a fancy way of saying they've created a special farming system that uses very little water. Here's how it works:

  • They combine things like worm farms (vermiculture), fish farming (aquaponics), and small animals to create a mini-ecosystem.
  • This system only needs 10% of the water that regular gardens use. That's a huge saving!
  • Schools can use this system to grow food for their students or even sell extra food to make money.

Why Is This Important?

  • Healthy Food: Schools can grow their own healthy food, so kids have good meals.
  • Learning: Teachers can use the farming system to teach kids about science and nature.
  • Independence: Schools become less reliant on outside help and can provide for themselves.
  • Saving Water: The system helps save precious water, which is good for everyone and the planet.
  • Less need for funding: If schools can grow their own food, they don't need as much money to buy food.

How You Can Help:

  • Learn more about water conservation and why it's important.
  • Talk to your family and friends about the water crisis in South Africa.
  • If you are able to, and with permission from a grown up, you could help raise money for them.
  • Remember that saving water at home helps too!

In Simple Words:

This group is helping schools in South Africa grow food with very little water. This helps kids get healthy meals, teaches them important things, and saves water for everyone. They're making a big difference!
