Many of the participants in the ‘Empowering the Poor with Education and Skills’ program have been through traumatic, violent circumstances and often suffered from neglect. This has also led to them not being able to commence or complete their education. The cycle continues with no job, no financial security, helplessness, depression and having no hope for the future.
From the moment they come to Hand to Hand we are building confidence, skills, self-esteem and a hope for the future. They begin to see and understand that they can indeed do many things and they are valuable and important to their family and community. Sometimes this process can take a while, but we never quit!
Recently whilst visiting the local slums a lady was using recycled bags from fabric softener, rice bags and other soft plastics to make beautiful flowers. She meticulously cut the plastic and I asked her why she was making them and she replied ‘they are beautiful and it makes me happy’. These flowers use recycled materials, are easy to make and bring joy all at the same time. They were perfect for our project!
We made this lady the head of the flower making project and she is now earning an income. As she teaches more people how to make them, they also are being paid as the foundation purchases all the flowers made and gives them as thank you gifts to people. Everyone who receives a flower is amazed at the detail, beauty and idea that came to the lady.
One day in the future this may become a business for the lady. You don’t need a college education to dream up ideas and make a change. Thank you so much for all your support which allows us to support our new entrepreneur!
