A Brighter Future for Women and Girls in Venezuela

Camila, 22, is studying medicine at Universidad de Los Andes in Tachira, Venezuela. Before university, she struggled with time management.

“I used to prioritise other fun things over my study time, and was learning slowly and poorly. Now I have my study time as a priority, and put an hour and a date to everything. And it’s made learning so much easier and more enjoyable.”

With support from a mentor, Camila has gained confidence and a new outlook. Now, Camila leads weekly sessions teaching study skills and values to younger girls.

“I helped kids get better at schoolwork and saw them grow in confidence. I led by example and saw I could also be a source of inspiration for others. I felt very proud seeing the young girls I taught realise their potential, and see improvements not only in their studies, but also their everyday lives.”

Her experience has reshaped her goals.

“Before I only thought about what benefits my dreams would bring to me, and now I see how my success could help others. Seeing my own improvement with the help I received from my mentor, I now want to be something like that to other young girls.”

In the Basurero neighbourhood, where Guatemala City’s largest landfill sits, families live with daily uncertainty, struggling against poverty, crime, and rising costs. 40% of households are led by single mothers, making education a distant dream for many. Colegio Junkabal is changing that. Through formal schooling, technical training and mentoring, the school gives girls the skills, confidence, and faith to break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future.

Raised by a single mother in the Basurero Community, Ana had limited opportunities. At Junkabal, she found more than an education—she found people who believed in her before she believed in herself. With mentorship, academic and pastoral support, she uncovered talents she never knew she had—poetry, cooking, and sports.

Now excelling in school, Ana is a scholarship finalist for APDE schools. She dreams of travelling and becoming a psychologist, helping others navigate challenges she once faced.

Ana expressed: "I want to prove to myself that I can achieve what once felt impossible. This school has changed my life, and I will make the most of it.”
