Hand pumps are best source of water in rural areas

By Abid Lashari | Project Lead

Access to safe and clean drinking water remains a major challenge in rural areas of Sindh, particularly for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and their families. In many villages, water sources are located far from homes, making access difficult, unsafe, and undignified for children and adults with physical or intellectual disabilities.

Hand pumps are one of the most reliable, low-cost, and sustainable sources of water in rural Pakistan. They require minimal maintenance, function without electricity, and provide year-round access to groundwater. Through this project, NDF Pakistan aimed to install accessible hand pumps to improve WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) conditions for persons with disabilities and vulnerable households.

Activities Implemented During Reporting Period

During the reporting period, NDF Pakistan successfully carried out the following activities:

  • Identification of beneficiary households with persons with disabilities

  • Community consultations to select appropriate and accessible locations

  • Installation of hand pumps in targeted rural areas

  • Awareness sessions with families on safe water use and hygiene practices

  • Community engagement for ownership and basic maintenance

  • 07 persons with disabilities directly benefited

  • Improved daily access to clean and safe drinking water
